How to Read a Diamond Certificate (IGI, GIA & HRD)

A diamond certificate can look impressive without revealing whether the diamond itself will look impressive. The document confirms the stone’s identity, origin and measured characteristics, including its carat weight, color, clarity and dimensions, but it cannot replace a visual assessment of the diamond.

Learning how to read a diamond certificate means understanding which details are factual, which grades require context and which measurements may reveal a stone that carries weight without delivering visual presence. The report should therefore be used as a starting point: review the information first, then inspect the diamond’s proportions, outline and light performance before making a decision.

WHAT IS A DIAMOND CERTIFICATE?

The term “diamond certificate” is common. The more accurate name is a diamond grading report.

It is an independent laboratory’s assessment of a specific stone at the time it was examined. The report identifies whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown and documents its measurable characteristics.

It is not a financial valuation. It does not predict resale value. It is not a guarantee that the diamond is beautiful.

The laboratory grades the stone. Selection decides whether the grades work together.

For lab-grown diamonds, the report must state clearly that the stone is laboratory-grown rather than natural or a simulant. Our guide to lab-grown diamonds explains why origin changes the production process, not the material itself.

START WITH THE REPORT NUMBER

Every report has a unique diamond certificate number connecting the physical diamond to the laboratory record.

Do not trust a printed document because the logo looks correct. Enter the number into the laboratory’s official database:

The online record should match the report exactly: date, measurements, carat weight, shape, grades and comments.

Then check the girdle inscription. Many independently graded lab-grown diamonds carry a microscopic laser inscription with the report number and laboratory-grown wording. It does not affect the appearance of the stone.

The number on the document, the online record and the girdle must agree.

That is diamond certificate verification. Do it before the stone is set whenever possible.

CONFIRM THE ORIGIN

The report should state “laboratory-grown diamond,” “lab-grown diamond” or equivalent wording.

A lab-grown diamond is not moissanite, cubic zirconia or glass. It is diamond, produced through a different growth process. Specialist equipment is required to confirm that origin.

That is the purpose of lab-grown diamond certification. It verifies the material and identifies how the stone originated.

SHAPE, CUTTING STYLE AND MEASUREMENTS

“Shape and cutting style” identifies the outline and facet arrangement. A round brilliant uses brilliant-style faceting. An emerald cut uses broad step facets. A radiant combines a geometric outline with brilliant-style facets.

The report identifies the category.

The stone shows the execution.

Measurements are listed in millimeters. For rounds, expect minimum diameter, maximum diameter and depth. Fancy shapes are usually recorded by length, width and depth.

These numbers reveal how the carat weight is distributed. A deeply cut stone can hide weight below the girdle. A very shallow stone may spread widely but lose light.

Compare measurements before price.

Length-to-width ratio also comes from these dimensions. It helps show whether a fancy shape is compact or elongated, but there is no perfect ratio for every diamond. Balance matters more than a trend.

CARAT WEIGHT: PRECISE BUT INCOMPLETE

Carat measures weight. One carat equals 0.2 grams.

It is the most objective field on a diamond grading report, but it is often given too much importance.

A 2.00 ct diamond is not automatically a stronger choice than a 1.90 ct diamond. If the smaller stone has better spread, proportion and light return, it can look larger and perform better.

Do not pay for weight you cannot see.

Read carat beside the measurements. Never read it alone.

COLOR: CHECK THE LABORATORY AND ISSUE DATE

Traditional white-diamond reports use the D-to-Z color scale. D represents the absence of visible body color; lower grades become progressively warmer.

The highest letter is not always the smartest use of the budget. Differences between adjacent grades can be subtle after setting. Metal color, shape and size all affect how warmth appears.

Fancy-colored diamonds use a different system based on hue, tone, saturation and distribution.

The laboratory format matters.

A current IGI diamond certificate normally gives a specific color grade. HRD Antwerp used detailed 4C nomenclature for laboratory-grown reports as well, but as of 2026 HRD no longer issues grading reports for loose lab-grown diamonds, so a "current" HRD report on a loose stone will not exist going forward. Any HRD lab-grown certificate you encounter now will be a legacy report issued before the change.

A current GIA diamond certificate for a colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown stone works differently. Since October 2025, GIA has used the broader classifications “Premium” and “Standard” rather than the traditional color and clarity terminology used for natural diamonds. Older GIA lab-grown reports may still show detailed grades.

Check the issue date.

Do not assume every report carrying the same logo uses the same system.

CLARITY: READ THE LOCATION, NOT ONLY THE GRADE

Clarity evaluates internal inclusions and external blemishes under 10× magnification.

Traditional grades range from Flawless or Internally Flawless through VVS, VS, SI and Included categories.

The grade is only the beginning.

A small inclusion near the edge may be visually insignificant and concealed by a prong. A dark inclusion beneath the table may be easier to see. A surface-reaching inclusion may deserve closer inspection for durability.

For most fine-jewelry purchases, the target is eye-clean.

Once the stone looks clean without magnification and the inclusion does not affect transparency or structure, paying for a higher grade may change the report more than the finished piece.

Put the budget where it remains visible.

CUT, POLISH AND SYMMETRY

Cut has the greatest effect on brilliance, fire and scintillation.

Round brilliant diamonds are most consistently supported by overall cut grades. Fancy shapes may receive polish and symmetry grades without a directly comparable overall cut grade, depending on the laboratory and report.

An “Excellent” label is not permission to stop looking.

Fancy shapes can show visual characteristics that a single grade cannot fully explain, including bow-ties (dark, bow-shaped areas across the center of the stone), windowing (a transparent or glassy area where light passes through instead of reflecting back), uneven light patterns or weak outlines. Proportions can also vary within the same grade.

Polish describes the finish of the facet surfaces. Symmetry describes facet alignment and technical balance. Excellent is preferred; Very Good can also perform well.

Technical symmetry is not the same as an attractive outline.
Both matter.

Cut first. Always verify it visually.

FLUORESCENCE AND COMMENTS

Fluorescence describes how a diamond reacts under ultraviolet light. Reports may grade it from None to Very Strong.

It is not automatically a defect.

In many diamonds, fluorescence has little visible effect. In some stones, stronger fluorescence can interact with transparency and create a hazy appearance. Judge the individual diamond.

Then read the comments section.

This is where the laboratory may record the lab-grown origin, laser inscription, growth process and post-growth treatment.

Lab-grown diamonds are generally produced through CVD or HPHT. Either method can produce a high-quality diamond. Growth method is not a grade.

Some stones undergo post-growth treatment to adjust color. That treatment should be disclosed where the report format provides for it.

IGI VS. GIA

IGI

An IGI diamond certificate is widely used for lab-grown diamonds and follows a detailed 4C-based format. It commonly records specific color and clarity grades, dimensions, polish, symmetry, fluorescence and identifying comments.

The detail makes direct comparison straightforward.

IGI also grades finished jewelry, although mounting can limit the assessment of an individual stone.

GIA

A GIA diamond certificate remains an independent laboratory document, but current lab-grown reports must be read according to the service used.

For loose colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamonds, GIA now issues an overall Premium or Standard assessment. Laboratory-grown colored diamonds have separate report options with more detailed color information, and some include a clarity plot and assessment of growth type or post-growth treatment.

A report issued before October 2025 may use the older detailed format.

Issue date matters.

HRD Antwerp

HRD Antwerp historically graded loose lab-grown diamonds using detailed 4C nomenclature, similar to its natural diamond certification reports.

As of 2026, HRD Antwerp no longer issues lab-grown diamond certificates for loose stones, focusing exclusively on natural diamond grading. HRD still certifies lab-grown diamonds once they're set in finished jewelry, just not as loose stones.

If you come across an HRD lab-grown diamond certificate, it's a legacy report issued before 2026. It remains a valid diamond certificate, HRD simply no longer offers loose lab-grown certification as an active service.

Today, IGI is the leading laboratory for loose lab-grown diamond certification, with GIA's Premium and Standard classification system offering an alternative since October 2025.

The right question is not, “Which logo is best?”

Ask whether the report is genuine, current, appropriate for the stone and detailed enough for the comparison being made.

WHAT THE CERTIFICATE CANNOT TELL YOU

A report cannot show whether an oval’s bow-tie is distracting.

It cannot show whether an emerald cut feels bright or lifeless in motion.

It cannot judge whether a radiant has a balanced outline, whether a pear looks elegant on the hand or whether the setting has been engineered properly.

Certification confirms.

Selection interprets.

THE FINAL CHECKLIST

Before approving a diamond, confirm:

  1. The report clearly identifies natural or laboratory-grown origin.
  2. The diamond certificate number matches the official database.
  3. The girdle inscription matches where one is present.
  4. Shape, measurements and carat weight match the physical stone.
  5. Color and clarity are understood within that laboratory’s format.
  6. Cut, polish and symmetry suit the shape.
  7. Fluorescence has been assessed on the stone.
  8. Comments and treatments have been read.
  9. The diamond has been inspected beyond the paper.
