Fancy Color Diamond Grading: Hue, Tone & Saturation Explained

Colored diamonds are among the most fascinating gems on Earth and grading them is both an art and a science.
Pink, blue, yellow, or green, every color diamond is evaluated using a system that measures Hue, Tone, and Saturation, known collectively as Fancy Color Grading.

What Does “Fancy Color” Mean?

Unlike colorless diamonds (graded D–Z), fancy color diamonds are valued for their color, not against it.
When a diamond’s hue is rich enough to move beyond “Z” on the color scale, it enters the Fancy Color category.

In short: “Fancy” simply means noticeable and attractive color.

The 3 Elements of Fancy Color Grading

Fancy color diamonds are graded by analyzing three attributes that define the visual appearance of the color:

Hue

The basic color of the diamond (pink, blue, yellow, green, etc.)
Some diamonds may have secondary hues for example, “greenish blue” or “orangy pink.”

💡 The first color mentioned is always the dominant hue.

Tone

The lightness or darkness of the color.
Tone affects how vibrant or subdued the diamond appears.

How IGI and GIA Grade Fancy Colors

Both IGI and GIA use similar systems to evaluate fancy color diamonds under standardized lighting and viewing conditions.

The final grade appears as a combination of tone and saturation, such as:

  • Fancy Light Yellow
  • Fancy Pink
  • Fancy Intense Blue
  • Fancy Vivid Green

💡 BÄL Tip:
When comparing stones, focus on “Fancy Intense” and “Fancy Vivid” for the richest, most vibrant results.

The Fancy Color Scale (Visual Reference)

You can visualize the progression of intensity like this:

Faint → Very Light → Light → Fancy → Fancy Intense → Fancy Vivid

Each step represents a significant visual and value difference.

💡 Example:
A Fancy Vivid Pink diamond can be 5–10x more valuable than a Fancy Light Pink of the same size.

How Lighting Affects Perception

Lighting plays a huge role in how we perceive diamond color:

  • Natural daylight reveals true tone and hue
  • Warm lighting enhances yellows, oranges, and pinks
  • Cool lighting brings out blues and greens

At BÄL Diamonds, every photo and rendering is color-calibrated to represent the diamond’s actual appearance under neutral daylight.

Fancy Color Certification

Every colored diamond from BÄL Diamonds is accompanied by an IGI or GIA certificate, listing:

  • Color description and intensity
  • Growth method (CVD or HPHT)
  • Cut, clarity, and carat weight
  • Unique laser inscription for traceability

This ensures full transparency and confidence when choosing your diamond.

Choosing the Right Color Intensity for You

The best color grade depends on your style and how you plan to wear your diamond:

  • Fancy Light: Soft, romantic, minimalist look
  • Fancy Intense: Balanced brilliance and saturation
  • Fancy Vivid: Bold, statement-making, luxurious

💡 BÄL Tip: Combine Fancy Intense stones with white gold for contrast, or Fancy Light stones with rose gold for warmth.
