The 4Cs of Lab-Grown Diamonds: Cut, Color, Clarity & Carat

Every diamond, natural or lab-grown, is graded by the same universal standard known as the 4Cs.
These four factors determine a diamond’s appearance, brilliance, and value.

At BÄL Diamonds, we use the same exact standards as the world’s top gemological laboratories, ensuring every stone we offer meets the highest level of beauty and craftsmanship.

Carat: The Measure of Weight and Size

Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its visual size though the two are related.
One carat equals 0.2 gram.

Because lab-grown diamonds cost less per carat, you can choose a larger size without compromising quality.
For example:

  • A 1.00ct lab-grown diamond often costs less than half the price of its mined equivalent.
  • A 2.00ct lab-grown stone remains attainable while maintaining exceptional brilliance.

💡 BÄL Tip: Choose based on your finger size, setting style, and personal taste not just carat weight.

Color: The Shade of Brilliance

Color grading measures how colorless a diamond is.
The less color it has, the rarer and more valuable it becomes.

GRADE

DESCRIPTION

D–F

Colorless - the purest white

G–H

Near colorless -  excellent value

I–J

Slight warmth, still bright white

K–M

Noticeable warmth - can look vintage

Lab-grown diamonds are often whiter and brighter than mined ones because of controlled growth conditions.
They’re also available in fancy colors like pink, yellow, or blue created by adding natural trace elements during growth.

Clarity: The Purity of Perfection

Clarity describes the absence of internal inclusions and surface blemishes.
Most lab-grown diamonds have fewer inclusions than mined ones, thanks to precise growth environments.

GRADE

MEANING

FL–IF

Flawless / Internally Flawless - extremely rare

VVS1–VVS2

Very, very slightly included - tiny marks, invisible to naked eye

VS1–VS2

Very slightly included - great balance of quality and value

SI1–SI2

Slightly included - small inclusions visible only under magnification

I1–I3

Included - visible imperfections, less brilliance

💡 BÄL Tip: Choose VS2 or better for a clean, eye-perfect diamond at an optimal price point.

Cut: The Sparkle Factor

The cut of a diamond determines how light reflects through it and ultimately how much it sparkles.
A perfectly cut diamond captures light, bounces it internally, and returns it through the top in a brilliant flash.

Even a flawless diamond can look dull if cut poorly.
That’s why we prioritize Excellent or Ideal cuts in all our lab-grown stones.

Grades (best to least):
✨ Ideal → Excellent → Very Good → Good → Fair

💡 BÄL Tip: When choosing, prioritize Cut over Carat brilliance matters more than size.

Certification: The Proof of Quality

Each lab-grown diamond from BÄL Diamonds comes with a certificate from IGI or GIA, verifying its 4Cs and authenticity.
This ensures full transparency and gives you the same level of trust as any natural diamond purchase.

Why the 4Cs Matter for Lab-Grown Diamonds

The 4Cs were developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and apply equally to both mined and lab-grown diamonds.
Understanding them empowers you to make an informed, confident decision with no compromise on beauty or ethics.

At BÄL DIAMONDS, we provide full 4C grading transparency for every certified stone because knowledge is luxury.
