10 mm — The Huggie

A 10 mm hoop sits tight against the earlobe. It reads as a stud from a distance and reveals its structure only up close. Huggies are ideal for everyday wear, travel, or layering with other earrings. On a set ear with multiple piercings, they anchor the lobe beautifully.
Do not mistake their size for simplicity. A well-set huggie in 18k gold with hand-selected lab-grown diamonds delivers extraordinary visual density in a compact format. The precision of the setting matters enormously at this scale. There is nowhere to hide.

20 mm — The Everyday Hoop

This is the most versatile diameter in the range. Large enough to be visible and intentional, small enough to wear from morning to evening without adjustment. The 20 mm hoop sits just below the earlobe and moves with the ear.
It is the size that photographs well, works with hair up or down, and transitions between a working day and an evening without feeling out of place. If you are choosing one size, this is the one.

30 mm — The Statement Hoop

A 30 mm hoop is deliberate. It is the diameter you choose when the earring is meant to be noticed: evenings, events, occasions where presence matters. Diamond Shapes in Hoop Earrings

Not every diamond shape translates equally well to a hoop setting. It also determines orientation: depending on the shape, we set stones horizontally or vertically along the hoop, and that single decision changes the character of the piece entirely.

Round Brilliant

The round brilliant is the most light-efficient cut in existence. Its 58 facets are specifically engineered for maximum brilliance and fire. In a hoop setting, rounds deliver consistent, intense sparkle all the way around the arc. Bezel-set rounds create a clean, modern look with excellent stone security. Prong-set rounds maximize light exposure.

Oval

Oval diamonds offer more surface coverage per carat than round stones. Their elongated silhouette creates a fluid, unbroken line when set in sequence around a hoop, particularly effective in prong settings where the stones sit close together. Set horizontally, ovals create a wide, generous arc. Set vertically, the same stone reads taller and more graphic. Oval hoops photograph with exceptional clarity of shape in both orientations.

Marquise

Marquise diamonds are pointed at both ends, which allows them to tile seamlessly along the curve of a hoop without gaps. The result is an architectural, almost seamless band of light. Set horizontally, marquise stones emphasize width and create a bold, continuous surface. Set vertically, they create a more elongated, fashion-forward look. Marquise hoops are a distinctive choice: less classic, more directional.

Emerald

The emerald cut is a step-cut stone with a rectangular table and cropped corners. It does not deliver the same fire as a brilliant cut. What it delivers instead is clarity, depth, and a particular kind of composed light that collectors often prefer. In a hoop setting, emerald cuts set horizontally create a structured, almost architectural arc. Set vertically, they read as stacked rectangles of glass-like transparency. It is one of the most sophisticated shape choices in a hoop format.

Radiant

The radiant cut combines the rectangular outline of the emerald with the faceting of a brilliant, giving you both structure and sparkle. It is a versatile shape in a hoop: set horizontally it reads bold and bright, set vertically it creates a vivid, textured surface of light. Mixed Shapes

Inside-Out vs. Outside-Only

The inside-out construction is what separates a genuinely sophisticated hoop from a classic one. Both are valid. They just deliver very different results.

Outside-Only

A traditional diamond hoop has stones set only on the outer-facing arc. When the earring hangs straight, the effect is clean and intentional. Many collectors have a pair and love them precisely for that reason: they are graphic, precise, and elegant in their simplicity. It is a great construction. It is simply not what we focus on at BÄL.

Inside-Out

An inside-out hoop carries diamonds on both the outer and inner face of the arc. At any angle, at any tilt, some diamonds are always facing outward and catching light. The piece is continuously alive in a way that a single-sided hoop is not.

Inside-out construction requires significantly more stones, more precise setting work, and more careful calibration of the band's weight and proportions. It is the more demanding version to produce and the more rewarding version to wear.

Diamond Settings: Prong, Bezel, and What They Each Do

Prong Setting

Prongs grip the stone at its girdle, the widest point, leaving the majority of the diamond exposed. More light enters the stone from the sides, which translates to stronger brilliance and fire. Prong-set hoops tend to have a lighter, more open visual quality.

The trade-off is structure. Prongs require precise calibration: too fine and they are fragile, too heavy and they kill the visual effect. At BÄL, prong dimensions are calculated in relation to stone size and hoop diameter, not standardized across the collection.

Bezel Setting

A bezel setting wraps a fine rim of gold around the entire circumference of the stone. The diamond is fully secured and slightly recessed. Bezel-set hoops have a cleaner, more graphic profile. The gold rim creates a deliberate visual frame around each stone.

Bezel settings are often considered more secure for daily wear. They also carry a particular aesthetic: precise, architectural, modern. A full-bezel hoop in 18k gold reads as a considered design decision rather than a default choice.

Mixed: Prong and Bezel on the Same Hoop

Some of our pieces combine prong-set and bezel-set stones on the same arc. The effect creates visual rhythm. The eye moves from the open sparkle of prong-set stones to the framed structure of the bezels. When the proportions are calibrated correctly, the result is a piece that is more interesting to look at than a single-setting hoop, without becoming busy.

The Closure System: Security You Can Feel

Most buyers do not think about how a hoop closes until they have lost one. The closure is the structural detail that determines how secure the earring is in daily wear and how easy it is to put on and take off.

The Post-and-Snap Closure

BÄL hoops use a post-and-snap closure. A straight 18k gold post passes through the piercing. On the opposite end, a hinged clasp receives the post and snaps shut with a precise, audible click. The clasp locks flat against the inner ear, flush with the hoop structure.

This system has several advantages over spring-hinged or latch-back closures. It is low-profile: the closed clasp adds no visible bulk to the earring. The snap is positive and deliberate. You know when it is closed and when it is not. And the flat profile means the hoop sits cleanly against the ear at all diameters.

For inside-out construction specifically, a clean closure is essential. The inner face of the hoop carries diamonds and must sit correctly against the ear. The post-and-snap system ensures that.

Metal: Why 18k Gold

All BÄL pieces are made in 18k gold, nickel-free and hypoallergenic. This is not a default. It is a decision made for structural, aesthetic and wear-comfort reasons.

18k gold is 75% pure gold. It is harder and more durable than 24k or 22k gold, which are too soft for fine jewelry in daily wear. It is also more resistant to wear and color change than 9k or 10k gold. The balance of purity, durability, and workability is optimal at 18k for a piece like a hoop earring, a format that moves constantly and needs to hold its setting with precision.

The three gold colors each create a different relationship with a white diamond:

Yellow gold draws warmth out of white stones. It creates a rich, saturated contrast. Classic and directional.

White gold is rhodium-plated and creates a cooler, more minimal palette. The gold recedes and the diamonds read as the primary surface.

Lab-Grown Diamonds: The Same Stone, a Different Origin

Every stone in a BÄL hoop earring is a lab-grown diamond. Not a simulant. Not a diamond alternative. A diamond, chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined stone, produced in a controlled laboratory environment rather than extracted from the earth.

The distinction matters because it is frequently misunderstood. Lab-grown diamonds have the same crystal structure (carbon, cubic), the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), the same refractive index, and the same grading system. They cannot be distinguished from mined diamonds by sight, touch, or standard gemological testing.

For a hoop earring set with multiple stones, the practical advantage is significant. The same budget that would purchase a modest mined diamond hoop can produce a far more generous lab-grown piece. For our clients, that typically means a larger diameter, a higher stone count, or both.
